Project Type:
Hydrology
Size:
12,000 linear feet of stream channel
Location:
Mountain Brook, Alabama
Services Provided:
Hydrology, Hydraulics, Civil Engineering, Bridge Design, Land Surveying, Environmental Consulting, Cost Estimating
Challenges:
Extremely complex flood modeling with multiple flow paths. FEMA funded and approval necessary. Densely developed area created constraints on improvement options.
Mountain Brook Village is retail and commercial hub for the city of Mountain Brook. In addition, the Birmingham Zoo, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, single family residences, and apartment complexes are located adjacent to Mountain Brook Village. Due to restrictions in the bridge and stream channels, some parts of the village and adjacent properties regularly flood, causing a significant economic impact. The purpose of this project was to study the existing flood conditions and develop a plan to reduce flooding to the maximum extent possible. In addition to developing the plan, we were tasked with designing the improvements, including redesigning bridges, and permitting through FEMA and the Corp of Engineers.
