Land Energy was a proposed 1000 acre lake and residential development that was permitted but never constructed. Covering 10,000 acres of previously strip-mined property, the size and scope of the Corp of Engineers permit request was one of the largest in the state in many years. Schoel was responsible for designing the dam, determining the proper pool elevation for the lake, and then permitting the project with the Corp of Engineers. The permit required a full Environmental Assessment, which included vast water quality studies, water quality modeling, threatened and endangered species studies, historical and archeological studies, acid mine drainage assessments, delineation of 10,000 acres for wetlands and Corp of Engineers jurisdictional streams, and an on-site mitigation plan. This process took over 3 years and the permit was approved by the Corp of Engineers.
